‘A Display of Heraldie’
A super antiquarian book from 1611. With a detached front board and 282 pages. This was bought with a slip of paper inside marked to Sothebys with the previous owners assessment of the volume which reads :
“ a Display of Heraldie by John Gwillim, printed in London by William Hall for ? 1611 containing 282 ( foolscap) pages but excluding the frontispiece and apparently usual “build up” at that time. This is in remarkably good condition being in the stiff backed holder I rescued it in from the ‘destructor cart ‘ well over 50 years ago……….furthermore some ( apparently )Victorian ‘liberal’ has penned remarks in the margin of the preamble and many of the illustrated bearings or examples are in vivid primary colour, original or later I know not . I know the book set me on my life long interest in heraldry”
I particularly love the Victorian liberals annotations , they have altered the dedication to read ‘by the lying flatterer of the Humbug family‘ !!!
