A Saltglaze tobacco jar with a lovely provenance……said to be a likeness of ‘old man Craven ‘ otherwise known as Hiram Craven, a Victorian wire merchant and one of the founders of Hepworth Iron Company.
As well as being a seafaring chap ( hence the sailors garb) he was also a canny businessman who amongst other things owned a large banana plantation and was known for his eccentric private life.
Knocked in places with use and age but very solid and with a lovely treacle -y glaze.
He’d make a great doorstop !
Height 34 cm .
Available within UK only , he’s blooming heavy !
