Concealed shoes.
This one is a beauty. Expertly made it has a gorgeous shaped leather body and upturned toe and the tiny wooden sole is so smooth and time worn .

(After thirty years of buying and selling ‘stuff’ you start to notice themes. During numerous estate clearances of old properties I was intrigued as to why quite often we’d find one ( nearly always a child’s ) carefully kept shoe.
 
It’s fascinating to know that this is a custom found in countries all over the world….. the placing of a shoe under the floorboards of a house , in a window casing or perhaps (more often the case when we’ve found them) a shoe that has been retrieved by newer occupants of a house and kept as part of the building’s history.  No one is entirely sure of the customs origins …. possibly an enchantment to bestow fertility on a newly wed couple, or to protect the children of the household from evil spirits, or on a sadder note, a tiny memento from the untimely death of a child . )
