A large school sampler dated 1853 and stitched by Ann Hayes Sheraton.
In good condition and stitched in wonderfully bright wool ….with some losses to the ‘Honor thy Father and thy Mother’. Decorated with crowns, flags, crossed keys and anchors, church windows and with a colourful border in a variety of stitches.
Stitched to the bottom ‘National School 1853’. The National Society was set up in 1811 and sought to provide the first near-universal system of elementary education in England and Wales for children from poorer families.
