Five Ink Paintings by Christabel Mary Flint | Briggs & Oliver

A collection of five ink and watercolour fairy paintings, naively executed by a Miss Christabel Mary Flint.

She would probably be considered an outsider artist now and if it weren’t for the fortuitous scrap of newspaper stuck to the back of one of the paintings , I would have struggled to find anything about her.

The clipping is torn but readable and tells us of the ‘Passing of Miss Flint’ and her story of ‘wonderful patience and stoicism’.

A fine scholar, she had a promising academic career before being struck down with rheumatoid arthritis. ‘She could just use her fingers slightly but with quiet perseverance she used to paint some beautiful decorative work for illuminated addresses and suchlike. For hours she would persevere with her brushes ‘ .

All signed C.M.R. They are undated but the newspaper clipping mentions her schooling started in 1911 so I’m presuming these were done in the 1920’s, a time when fairies were of popular interest, fuelled by earlier and contemporary literature including Peter Pan and the ever popular Flower Fairies.

The three larger paintings measure 18 x 28 cm , the two smaller ones are 9 x 28 cm . With their original black paper frames on glass .
