A fabulous edition of these iconic Natural History books. In two volumes and dated 1832 these are leather bound with beautifully tooled gilt spines and marbled boards and endpapers. Printed by Charles Henry Cook of Newcastle. Volume one covers British land birds, volume two, water birds. Both are wonderfully illustrated throughout with wood cut engravings by Thomas Bewick. The tiny vignettes that Bewick created at the end of each chapter are just as charming as his bird portraits. In these little tailpiece scenes, he takes a humorous look at familiar subjects from country life.
