Shropshire born Cecily Peele was an author, mapmaker, engraver and illustrator and founded the Alley Workshops in Oxford in 1922. The workshops sound like just the sort of shop you’d love to have a wander around and an advert for the time describes them as stocking,
‘Wild and tame toys. Jewels and Beads. Prints, pottery and handwoven scarves. Dragons. Jumpers and embroidered frocks. Cigarette boxes and mirrors. Knights. Plaited felt slippers. Prehistoric Beasts.’
This is one of her creations, a wonderful and rare little book of British folklore.
